Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, based in Stockholm, is better known as Ericsson, a prominent international mobile phone manufacturer. The company is also a prominent supplier of the infrastructure that enables telecommunications service providers to offer wireless service. In 1999, the company reorganized its businesses into three primary segments organized by customer type: Network Operators and Service Providers, Consumer Products, and Enterprise Solutions. At year-end 2000, there were about 415 million mobile phone users, with half using GSM (global system for mobile communications) systems, and the company expects this number to exceed one billion by early 2003.

The Consumer Products group primarily produces mobile telephones as well as other wireless consumer products. Ericsson's phones are based on both analog and digital standards. In 2000, Ericsson shipped 43.3 million mobile phones, an increase of 38% in volume and 21% in sales. The company kept a market share of more than 10% in a world market of approximately 405 to 415 million phones in year 2000, confirming its position as one the world?s top-three suppliers.

The Network Operators and Service Providers segment includes a majority of the business units included in the former Mobile Systems and Infocom Systems units. This segment includes both mobile and wireline systems for either voice or datacom services. Some 40% of the world's mobile subscribers are connected to the company's systems. Ericsson offers systems based on all of the standards, encompassing analog and digital-related standards. The company is focusing on delivering next-generation wireless systems that offer broadband wireless access. This segment's AXE switch offers Ericsson's customers coordinated wireline and mobile communications services.

Ericsson reported a loss in its Consumer Products operations of more than SEK 24 billion in 2000 due to the restructuring charges of over SEK 12 billion booked in 2000, which is expected to generate annual savings of around SEK 15 billion from 2002.

In November 2000, Ericsson completed a tender offer for all of the Common shares outstanding of Microwave Power Devices, Inc. at $8.70 in cash per share.

In October, Ericsson and Compaq Computer Corporation formed a strategic partnership to develop and build advanced switching computers for Ericsson's AXE-based next-generation wireless and wireline networks. These switches, which are the powerful computers at the heart of telephone networks, will incorporate Compaq's high performance AlphaServer and Tru64 UNIX technology.
