History and Business of Company
(this information may include date of incorporation)
Tellabs, Inc. (TLAB) designs, manufactures, markets and services optical networking, broadband access and voice-quality enhancement products. The company's voice and data transport and network access systems are used by telephone companies, long distance carriers, alternate service providers, wireless service providers, cable operators, government agencies, utilities and businesses. TLAB is positioned to capitalize on a global trend for these service providers to upgrade their systems to high-capacity digital technology.

Optical networking systems (64% of sales in 2000) include the company's flagship TITAN 5500 series, which consists of software intensive digital cross-connect systems and network management platforms. These systems are typically used to build the wideband and broadband transmission infrastructure of telecommunication service providers. During 2000, TLAB added two new products to its optical networking portfolio; the TITAN 6500, which has greater capacity and switches broadband signals at a lower cost than predecessor equipment; and the TITAN 6100, which allows service providers to deliver high-speed broadband services to customers in metropolitan areas. The company is also developing the TITAN 6700 optical switch, which should begin product testing in mid-year 2001. Optical networking grew 54% in 2000, due to continued strong demand for the Titan 5500 product.

Broadband access solutions (23%) provide seamless integration of circuit-switched voice and data, IP-data and voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) services, and access capacity expansion through digital subscriber line (DSL) technology. Products within this group include the MartisDXX managed access and transport system, the FOCUS family of SDH multiplexers and cross-connects and the CABLESPAN universal telephony distribution system. Broadband access grew 39% in 2000, fueled primarily by the CABLESPAN 2300 system, which helps cable operators build networks that support the delivery of voice video and data services.

Next generation switching (6%) includes the VERITY voice-quality enhancement products. In March 2001, TLAB terminated the SALIX 7000 next-generation switching product effort. In early 2000, the company had acquired for $300 million, Salix Technologies, a developer of class-independent switching solutions that enable service providers to offer next-generation services.

The remaining portion of sales in 2000 came from customer service revenue.

In February 2001, TLAB acquired Future Networks, Inc., a leader in standards-based voice and data cable modem technology.

INCORPORATED in Delaware Feb. 10, 1992, and on June 26, 1992, wholly owned Tellabs Operations, Inc., merged Tellabs, Inc.
